Technical details - IPTISnet

IPTISnet provides the following modules:
  • Journey planning engine
  • Address matching and name searching engine
  • Sample web pages
  • Data processing tools

The sample web pages can then be customised to suit your own site. The IPTIS journey planning engine that is provided with IPTISnet can also be provided as a separate component that could be incorporated into other third party customised user interfaces.

Platforms

IPTISnet is designed to run on a Windows NT/2000 platform.

Performance

On a well-configured Windows NT/2000 server, IPTISnet can deal with of the order of 1,000 journey planning enquiries per hour. If the rate of enquiries is significantly more than this, consideration should be given to a distributed processing network.

Timetable database

All necessary timetable and fares data is stored in a database on the server and downloaded in an extracted form to the PCs regularly. Carmen recommends an Oracle database.

Mapping components

When dynamic mapping is included, a suitable Internet mapping product would be required. Contact Opcom for recommendations.

Recommended specification

Opcom's current recommendation for the server is as follows:

  • Pentium III 800 CPU
  • 512 Mb RAM
  • Windows® NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 and IIS4 or Windows 2000 Server with IIS5.

However, before confirming this configuration in any specific case, it is necessary to examine the data in much more detail and to have an estimate of the number of enquiries expected. The size of the data depends, among other things, on the regularity of the running times along each route and therefore it is would require some investigation to properly specify the machine requirements.
